About this item

Offered is a gorgeous vintage FOX 36X Combat C/L Engine circa 1971-1973. This is a great example of Duke Fox's powerful Combat series engines produced by the Fox Manufacturing Company in the 60's and early 70's.  This particular engine is so well preserved you would darn near think that you were opening the original box.

They don't get much nicer than this.  This engine is complete right down to the hard to find venturi insert and comes mounted in a VP Model Engine Display Case.  The display case has a dark walnut finish, a non-evasive mount, a brass colored name plate with "FOX 36X Combat" inscribed and rubber feet on the bottom.  Though it is hard to tell, this engine is used.  I know it is as I ran it last spring for a couple of minutes.  The engine was exhausted of all fuel and after-run oil was generously applied afterwards.  It's definitely suitable for your collection and you'll love to show it off...  Or if you choose to mount in a period control line combat aircraft, it's ready to run... with or without pressure.  The compression is like-new and thus superb.  About the only minus I note is that there is a distortion at the rear of the exhaust port (an angled flat spot).  The head and crankcase screws are absolutely perfect.  It does not appear that either have ever been removed.  The lugs and lug holes look virgin although the engine was mounted and run in a test stand.

This engine has been very well preserved and has been kept well oiled.  The angled plug head has no missing or damaged fins.

Please note:  As this is basically a "new" engine, break-in procedures should be followed if engine is put into service.

The 36X was first introduced in 1964.  Combat flyers using the forerunner .35X had been blowing up the engine by trying to get too much extra power out of it.  They asked Duke Fox to strengthen the crankshaft and connecting rod.   While Duke was redesigning a new stronger crankshaft he decided that, since the combat rules allowed competitors to use up to a .36 size engine, he would increase the size of the .35X to .36 cubic inch engines for maximum displacement.  He increased the stroke to .715" and called the new engine a Fox .36X.  It looked just like the .35X except it acquired a bulge at the top of the bypass and had Fox .36X on the bypass.  The 1964 Fox .36X had the same head and center plug as the .35X.

In 1965 a new head with an angled plug was added.  In 1971 the web in the exhaust port appeared.  In 1974 Duke Fox released his all new Schneurel ported combat engine, the Mark 1 Combat Special.  Thus ending the era of the venerable 36X series.
