About this item
Offered is a
an absolutely gorgeous vintage "shiny case"
McCoy .19 "Blue Head" R/C
Engine circa 196?. This is a
fantastic example of the
shiny case "Blue Heads" designed by Dick McCoy and
manufactured and marketed by The Testor Corporation
between prior to 1967. This is an engine to be appreciated!
This engine comes
mounted in a VP
Model Engine Display Case. The display case has a golden oak
finish, rubber feet and a complimentary gold colored nameplate with "McCOY .19
Blue
Head" inscribed. This appears to be a NEW and UNUSED
engine. It's definitely suitable for
your collection and you'll love to show it off... Or if you choose
to mount in a period aircraft, it's certainly ready to run (this engine is
better off in the hands of a collector though). The
compression is excellent. The blue head has survived the
years with very minor chipping (you have to examine quite closely).
It is near mint. The lugs and their holes are
pristine. The crankcase has an imperfection (from the manufacturer)
in the casting below the exhaust port.
There is absolutely no rust present on the steel cylinder,
needle valve or head screws. The head and
crankcase cover screws are in perfect condition. The prop nut and washer
are
original and unmarred. The spray bar, spray bar nut and
throttle assembly are in
perfect condition. The McCOY "springy" needle valve is in
perfect condition. The crankshaft is true and there is
minimal crankshaft slop (about 1/32" or less)
which is exceptional for this series of McCOY's.
This engine is
"showcase" beauty, super-clean, has been kept well oiled and
hence is well preserved. It doesn't appear that
this engine was ever started and is in near mint (if not mint) new
condition. Given it's age, this is a quite exceptional find.
You will
not be disappointed in the least with this engine.
This is a center-plug engine. The Testor's McCOY "shiny case"
engines where first produced in 1957 (.35 Red Head). The McCOY 19
Red Head was first introduced in 1958. We're not clear as to when the
shiny case Blue Head R/C came into production. Our guess is somewhere around 1963. Production of this
series of shiny case engines ended with the
"Lightening Bolt" series that was released in 1967. Both
the Red Head and Blue Heads where given a new casting. Though
the Lightening Bolt series contained improvements over the shiny case
series, the shiny case is far more popular with collectors.

"Dick McCoy was one of the early
pioneers of model engine design and construction. His special
interest was in racing tethered model race cars, and he adapted
early aircraft model engine designs to suit the special needs of
race cars. He was good at getting the most out of an engine and
his engines set many speed records. They were popular with both
flyers and car racers."
